Ball and Chain; a thoughtfully curated bridal show that doesn’t feel like torture

Coming to the Plaza District of Oklahoma City on January 24th, 2013, is this labor of love from the Gibson Events team.  All the info and tickets are available here.  But here’s a little backstory… we’ve been working on this concept for about two years now.  Traditional bridal shows aren’t generally a great fit for us, or our friends in the business.  We know we have a niche market, and we’re okay with it.  But wouldn’t it be fun to show what we can do to folks who DO want our aesthetic?  Um, yes.

So we figured we should do a little styled shoot to support our vision.  We are absolutely THRILLED that Southern Weddings are not only participating in the Ball and Chain, but are also blogging our shoot today!  You can see their post here.

Below are more of our favorite photos from the day.  The best part, oh the best part… is that these images were captured by not just one, but four of our favorite photographers.  Everyone brings their own perspective, and the result is GORGEOUS.  We hope you’ll agree.

Hot of the press! Brides of Oklahoma 5th Anniversary issue!

We LOVE how our feature in the Spring/Summer 2012 issue of the Brides of Oklahoma turned out.  Do you?

I’ve heard from more than one person that I look, “intense” in this video.  I suppose that is preferable to looking, “like I’m sweating my ass off” which was the case.  At any rate, the video is AWESOME.  Thank you Chris Fox for putting far too many hours into figuring out the time lapse!

Mark and Jennifer

One of my favorite weddings ever! Mark and I are school friends from 5th grade and I couldn’t have been more pleased to meet Jennifer.  They are an absolutely perfect match.  Mark is a city planner by day, but moonlights as a partner in COOP Aleworks.  Jennifer does amazing work with the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.

Mark and Jennifer came to me shortly after their engagement with the idea to have an intimate ceremony and reception focused on hospitality and a general “warm and fuzzy” feeling.  They explained that they would love for it to feel like a night at one of their favorite restaurants (and site of one of their first few dates), but that it was an hour and a half drive from OKC.  I exclaimed that if they loved the place, their friends and family would too, and we should just go for it.  The result was the sweetest, most heartfelt and memorable wedding I could imagine.  Perfectly timed to end with a toast on the back deck as the sun set over the Oklahoma prairie.  Beautiful.

We were honored to have had Mark and Jennifer’s wedding featured as one of the “Brides of the Seasons” in the latest issue of the Brides of Oklahoma.

Photos by Josh McCullock photography, cake by Sugar, flowers by Poppy Lane Design, venue is the FABULOUS White Dog Hill.

A Royal Engagement as featured on Junebug Weddings

This is a long one.  Stay with me, you’ll be glad you did!

We are thrilled to have had this photoshoot featured on Junebug weddings.  Click here to see their whole post!  We’ve also included the photos and our description below.  Hope you love it!

We love William and Kate as much as our fellow Anglophiles, but feel that the posed, traditional photos released by the House of Windsor leave something to be desired when it comes to the true personality, style and character of the Royal family.

We wondered what we might see if we were to catch a glimpse of the couple and their closest friends in a relaxed, unguarded moment during this exciting time in their lives.

Here’s what we came up with!

Eco-trendy?

Well YES, actually! Although we fall into the proverbial “tree hugger” category, even the most mainstream bride can save the planet on her big day.  Here are few tips for ways that you and yours can help mother earth breathe a little more deeply.  We were honored for these ideas to be featured in the latest edition of the Brides of Oklahoma magazine!

As seen on Ruffled!

Library Styled Love Shoot

This bookishly sweet love shoot was sent to us by Josh McCullock, who teamed up with Gibson Events to produce a perfectly conceptualized mini-reception based on books, literature and a little bit of sparkle. You’re sure to fall in love with it just as quickly as I did.

eco-friendly wedding

From the design team: We loved the idea of two bookish types tying the knot in an old library or bookstore. She isn’t the white dress type and opted, instead, for dressy separates in a light palate. He sports new frames and a bow tie for the occasion.

Our bride incorporated hand made paper flowers into her bouquet and her décor carries a restrained, but a little sparkly, aesthetic. Stacked volumes, primitive pewter and mercury glass vessels filled with kale, lambs ear, rose hips, black dahlia, hydrangea, terra cotta and ivory roses compliment the silver rimmed china and glassware.

Custom napkins and padded chair backs featuring Mr. Darcy’s second profession of affection from Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (possibly the most romantic passage in literature?) round out the guest table.

The sophisticated palate of peacock, pewter, terra cotta, ivory and navy presents itself seamlessly throughout the décor and wardrobe. An old typewriter font graces the chair backs, cake, invitation and brew bar menu. Speaking of the invitation, a sweet (but fictional) story of the couple printed on a standard vellum page features the pertinent information in a larger point to make it jump off the page. The theme continues with a book page motif gracing the three layer meringue cake.

Oh no! Not another kids party!!!

I am a firm believer that kids birthday parties can be fun for all ages.  For our daughter’s 2nd birthday we kept things intimate with just 20 or so grown ups and her closest playmates.  A backyard cookout featuring locally grown and produced foods and flowers satisfied both the youthful and experienced palates.  For the kids we rented a snow cone machine from Marianne’s Rentals, but spiced it up a bit  for the over 21 set, with the “mommy & daddy special”.

Kathleen found the template for the pennants on one of our favorite blogs, Ruffled, and Sugar made the tastiest Big Bird cupcake I’ve ever eaten!

In the end, the kids played with bubbles (which were also the favors) and chased each other around the yard while the grown ups sat back and enjoyed a snow cone, or two.

Key Elements:

Using white as a base with bold colors as accents and keeping characters to a minimum (in this case we had “Sesame Street” cupcakes), allows the birthday girl to be the star of her own party and keeps the grown ups from experiencing character overload. The cupcakes looked pretty, but still youthful, displayed on cake stands from Gibson Essentials.

Flowers make things festive. These were bought the day of the party at the local farmers market and arranged in mason jars.

Snow cones are within reach!!!  The machine rental was only $45 and is SUPER easy to run.  We brought home some syrups from our good friends at Cafe Evoke and the result was fantastic!

Keep it earth friendly! We used our everyday dishes and white cloth napkins for the grown ups and a set of Ikea kids plates in bold colors for the kiddos.

Style Me Pretty featured blog!

We were honored when Style Me Pretty picked up these photos from our photoshoot for Marianne’s Rentals.

Here it is!

White Wedding by Josh McCullock and Gibson Events:

When I was little, my parents took me to visit my aunt, who happened to live in a perfect apartment right on the Boston Commons. An all white, absolutely perfect apartment right on the Boston Commons. I fell in love. Not with the apartment really, but with the idea of dressing my world in white. And ever since then, that is exactly what I have done. White winter coats, white furniture, white purses, shoes, pants, even white sofas. Gasp. So when I saw this white inspired wedding shoot sent to us by Oklahoma photographer Josh McCullock, with styling and design by Gibson Events, well…I swooned even harder than usual.

Inspiration: Wine glass terrariums, succulents, ferns and a vintage tandem bike

Some of the highlights of this shoot included locally made butcher block cutting board as cake plateau, succulents and ferns in a collection of milk glass compotes, vintage Schwinn tandem bike and custom menus and place cards designed by Kathleen Shannon for Gibson Events. They also had an Italian Soda bar featuring vinyl decal of tandem bike and a custom wedding cake by Sugar.

And if you didn’t think it could get any better…wrong! Here is a film of the shoot so you can really see it all come to life..

British Glam Thank You Ma’am!

We are so proud of the Gibson Events tabletop design spread on pages 88 and 89 of the brand new issue of the Brides of Oklahoma! The title of this year’s submission is British Glam. I imagined it as the reception for a couple of really hip Londoners.

Event design is pretty much one of my favorite things in the whole world. I really get into the creative process. This year my submission came complete with a playlist, that although not in the magazine, I feel enhances the visual experience. So… if you don’t mind, please amass the selections below before viewing either the spread, the video or the additional photos from the shoot featured here. Just kidding - I thought it was a cool idea though.

Cocktails:

Tabletop 2009

Gibson Events was honored to be selected for the “9 Designers and Their Tabletop Decor” feature in the latest issue of the Brides of Oklahoma Magazine.  I had a blast working with Tulips, B.C. Clark, Poppy Lane Design, Coles Garden and Tara Lokey to bring together my submitted design.
I really love a simple and well put together table.  My personal design aesthetic is more restrained than busy.  I can appreciate the quality of the pieces on this table, but I love that it looks inviting.  Don’t you just want to sit down and have a drink?
A special thanks to Tara Lokey for the beautiful photos!
